Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (JANA)

What is JANA?

The Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (JANA) is a consultative body consisting of civil society organizations and individuals working toward nuclear weapons abolition in Japan. The network was launched in 2010 to follow up on advocacy by civil society in conjunction to the Tokyo Forum for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (1998-99) and the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (2008-10).

Goals

Comprising of over 20 civil society organizations and other concerned individuals, JANA is working to realize a world free of nuclear weapons with a focus on four core issues:

  1. Establishing a global system that can achieve the elimination of nuclear weapons,
    including the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW);
  2. Reducing the role of nuclear weapons in security policies;
  3. Building new measures to ensure nuclear nonproliferation while safeguarding the
    civilian use of nuclear energy; and
  4. Establishing a regional security system that ensures a peaceful, nuclear weapon-free Northeast Asia.

Japan Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

In April 2024,JANA launched a nation-wide campaign called the “Japan Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons” with the aim of achieving Japan’s ratification to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the earliest date possible. The Japan Campaign will continue until 2030.

Building on the success of the International Signature Campaign in support of the Appeal of the Hibakusha for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (Hibakusha Appeal) that collected over 13 million signatures from 2016 to 2020, the Japan Campaign mobilizes the public and actively engages with policymakers in support of Japan joining the TPNW. Towards that goal, the Campaign works with all civil society actors in a manner inclusive of different political, economic and religious backgrounds, and engages with all political parties, including both the ruling and opposition parties.

The war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East are adding to our sense of urgency. We need to get rid of nuclear weapons to ensure these weapons of mass destruction will never be used again. We are calling for wide public support for the Japan Campaign in this critical moment in history.

The Japan Campaign conducts a wide range of activities, including, but not limited to:

  • Engaging with National Diet members of all political parties
  • Meeting with government officials
  • Holding public events and conducting media activities to promote the TPNW
  • Holding “TPNW Forums” with experts and journalists, open to the public

The Japan Campaign is supported by donations from the public - individuals, organizations, and corporations that support its goal.
